September

Posted on September 2, 2023

It’s 1 September in the Costa Brava.

Since I called this place home in 2012, 1 September marks the end of the madness that is summer here. All the noise and clogged streets vanish overnight like little elves who steal away after mending socks. 31 August the village is a hive of last moment fiesta that carry on late into the night. When I wake up on the morning of the first the tourists have disappeared. Returning to points unknown.

1 September also harkens back the cooler temperatures not seen since April. Summer was breathtakingly hot this year. But that’s done with. Even the light is different now. The days beginning the gradual drawing in before the winter. Temperatures return to something resembling civilized. The US Open tennis at Flushing Meadows kicks off. It’s been a must see for me for decades. During the Golden Age before the fall in 2008 I would be in NYC for the lead up to Fashion Week and would go out to Flushing Meadows to watch the odd match or watch it on the jumbo screen outside Rockefeller Center in the evenings.

The first day of September also began the final countdown to Euro Militare. I’d spend all summer counting the days down to the grand show in Folkestone. Once the calendar changed over to September from August, I was all on pins and needles in preparation for the big weekend in Folkestone — days of catching up with my mates, dinners and endless drinks, late nights and early mornings walking about the seaside town of Folkestone.

These early September days I’m up long before the sunrise. I make time of a morning to take my second cup of coffee just as the dawn breaks over the Med. Such moments bring me closer to Septembers past so important to the journey that is my life—Euro Militaire. September 11th.  Fashion Week. The US Open Tennis.

Now we’ve the big weekend in Veldhoven, Holland. SMC. Scale Model Challenge. But that’s not until October. I’ve got September to get though yet before the final countdown to the big weekend which like Euro Militare isn’t a weekend, but a five day blitz extraordinaire that I would not miss for the world. It’s still six weeks off, but if time proves us right, it’ll be here in no time at all. See you at the Oakwood Grill for drinks and dinner.

As always, the journey is everything.
